Pompton River Cleanup

The cleanup of the Pompton River was wildly successful!
Paddling a little over 2 miles of the Pompton River in Pequannock we removed the following items: 50 tires (many truck tires and tires with rusting rims), 3 shopping carts, a 17’ aluminum mangled canoe, an aluminum ladder, a big wheels Jeep, several large tarps and pieces of plastic, a pool liner, and various rusting car parts.
Items removed were placed at three different sites for pickup by DPW staff. Paddling with only 2 canoes, we had to leave behind many more tires and other items, but the river is much cleaner today regardless.
HUGE thanks to Walter Johnson for coming along and picking up small trash with a basket on his kayak, helping to dig out tires, and helping the group navigate two tricky rapids just upstream of Route 23. And a special thanks to the NJ Clean River Crew (pages on Facebook, Instagram, Tiktok) for partnering up on this cleanup. Stay cool everyone!
