Tootlin' Round the Tappan Zee
by Nancy & Mike Passow
August 5, 2007
A delightful time was had by 12 kayakers plus Toto the dog on Sunday, August 5, for Tootle Around the Tappan Zee -- part 3. We set out mid-morning from Piermont, NY, paddled across the Hudson River to view Sunnyside (Washington Irving's home) and then headed up the east shore of the Hudson (and under the Tappan Zee Bridge) to Horan's Landing, a nice little park with benches where we stopped for lunch. Then we paddled around the Tarrytown Lighthouse and headed back across the Hudson River to Piermont. Only one minor upset -- one paddler hit a funny current under the Tappan Zee Bridge (on the way back) and flipped. Mike was right there and helped the paddler back into his kayak. A few paddlers visited the Flywheel Creamery once we were back as well as the Piermont Farmers' Market. (As we were setting out in the morning, we met several paddlers who come over every Sunday morning from Tarrytown. They shop at the Farmers' Market, have a cup of coffee, and then paddle back home.)
We hope to do another Tootle Around the Tappan Zee in early October
(possibly Sunday, October 7).
