Saturday, June 20, 2026

Trip Leader: Melody Wenger
Put‑in: Gatwyns II Restaurant, 900 NJ‑15 North, Lake Hopatcong, NJ
Boats: 13 paddlers — 2 canoes, 11 kayaks
Distance:  Total ~4 miles (out‑and‑back)
Conditions: Warm, slightly windy day; sheltered inside lagoons, exposed near lake opening

Overview:
Thirteen HRCKC paddlers launched from Gatwyns II Restaurant for a scenic exploration of the Lake Hopatcong lagoons. The group enjoyed calm, protected waters within the narrow channels, where wind was minimal and conditions were ideal for relaxed paddling and wildlife viewing.

Route & Conditions:
The paddle began in the sheltered lagoon system, where the group moved through quiet coves filled with blooming white-water lilies with bright yellow centers. These flowers were abundant and created a beautiful, peaceful backdrop.

As the group approached the opening to the main lake, conditions changed as the wind was stronger. The canoes — along with several kayakers — made the smart call to retreat into the protected lagoons, where conditions remained calm.

The remaining paddlers continued to the lake’s opening and then split into two groups:
One group returned to the lagoons for continued sheltered paddling.
A smaller group ventured briefly into the open lake, rounding a bend to take in wider lake views before returning.

Highlights:
The water lily bloom was the star of the day — bright, abundant, and photogenic.
Paddlers enjoyed passing the lagoon homes, many with early summer gardens in full bloom, adding color and charm to the sheltered lagoon scenery.
Several friendly neighborhood dogs greeted the group from docks and yards, their enthusiastic barks echoing across the coves.
The lagoons provided perfect refuge from the wind, allowing the group to enjoy a safe and pleasant paddle despite challenging conditions on the main lake.

Post‑Paddle Social:
After returning to Gatwyns II, most of the group stayed for lunch on the patio, enjoying the sunshine and the relaxed atmosphere. The food was a hit — plates were cleared, and conversations were lively and full of laughter. It was the perfect way to wrap up a short but beautiful day on the water, with everyone clearly enjoying both the meal and the company.

A Big Thank You:
