Westchester Bald Eagles

...was a warm winter day, not even too bad down by the river. However, it has been a cold winter so far and there was some ice in the Hudson, indicating that upriver and parts north were probably iced in. So, there have been many bald eagles spending time in the Westchester/Rockland stretch of the river.

We had 16 members and guests venture out to see what we might find from Croton up to Peekskill and were rewarded with lots of activity. Just about evenly spread among the five stops were over 30 eagles. At Croton Point Park's landfill and campground trail we had some very good looks as both mature and immature eagles hovered in the wind right above us or perched nearby. Other highlights of the trip included diving bufflehead ducks and several small groups of lesser scaup.

Thanks to everyone for coming out in what was still the cold. Thanks to Alan Rabinowitz for the group photo at Fleichmann's (China) pier and to the anonymous good Samaritan who tried to snap a photo with Ritz's phone and ended up producing a cluster of 500! They're still being processed.
